Stamford is less than an hour train ride by way of the Metro-North train station. Downtown Stamford is home to a renaissance of arts and culture housing various entertainment venues, shops, theaters, and restaurants. The 83-acre Cove Island Park is a popular place to step away from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy some of Fairfield’s most relaxing coastal access:beaches, walking trails, and picnic areas. Ten miles southwest of Fairfield is Norwalk, unique for its maritime landmarks, museums, and lighthouses. Norwalk’s location near the Long Island Sound makes it a popular place for maritime activities and attractions, including its delectable annual Oyster Festival. Incorporated in 1651, the city of Norwalk contains a wealth of historical and cultural sites, such as the Lockwood Mathews Mansion (a registered National Historic Landmark) and the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, which specializes in exhibiting the marine life and ecology of the Long Island Sound. A mile off the coast, the Norwalk Islands, a twenty-five island chain, is a popular site for recreational activities, including boating, camping, bird watching, swimming, and kayaking. The second-largest island in the chain, Sheffield Island, offers walks through Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge and tours of the historic Sheffield Island Lighthouse.

Forty-five minutes north from Stamford is the town of Trumbull, which offers a fine balance of nature and commerce. The region’s largest mall, Trumbull Mall houses hundreds of shops and restaurants. The area is also home to several parks, including the popular Indian Ledge Park, which features a BMX race track. An hour northeast from Stamford is the City of Danbury. Downtown Danbury features a variety of restaurants, unique boutiques, and nightclubs. Several museums, including Danbury Museum and Historical Society and the Military Museum of Southern New England, are also located right in town.
