Somerset, NJ Attractions and Tourist Areas

199 PIERCE STREET, SOMERSET, NJ 08873

As one of America’s oldest counties, Somerset County is filled with historical remnants of Colonial America and the American Revolutionary War. In the county, dozens of museums are open to the public that display this history, including two headquarters of George Washington and four of his generals. Historical bridges and farmhouses color the landscape and serve as glimpses into Somerset County’s past. Agriculture is an important aspect of daily life in Somerset County, apparent in the rural countryside landscapes of rolling hills, grazing horses, serene parks, and colorful gardens. Although agriculture is strong in the county, modern commerce continues to grow. An example of agriculture integrating with commerce is seen in Bridgewater, the location for both the annual Somerset 4-H Fair and the Bridgewater Commons Mall. This combination of relaxing country living and thriving commerce makes Somerset one the most attractive counties in the state and one of the wealthiest in the country.

Somerset County is home to over 10,000 acres of parkland featuring golf courses, hiking paths, bike trails, Somerset County Parks, and stables. Lord Stirling Park, located in Basking Ridge, boasts diverse wildlife, eight-and-a-half miles of hiking trails, running streams, and sparkling ponds in its 425 acre-coverage of the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Another county park, Washington Rock State Park, in Green Book, features a thirty-mile panoramic view of the Raritan Valley. Washington Rock State Park’s Watchung Mountain once served as a chief lookout point for George Washington during the Revolutionary War and is still a popular vantage point for park And forest visitors.
